Our story

How a Hereford production hub came to be

buzztrix was founded in 2012 by Rachel Whitcombe, a producer who had spent years in live news and interview programmes. She saw that many productions struggled not with talent but with the technical groundwork behind the camera.

Rachel started the company to give broadcasters and venues one place to turn for the whole technical side of live television. Early work was modest: advising small studios on how to connect equipment they already owned, and supervising camera crews for interviews and local programmes.

Over the following years the work widened. Clients began asking for help with room acoustics, then lighting, and then with coverage of concerts and festival stages. Each request brought in a specialist, and the team grew to cover engineering, lighting and camera supervision, and sound.

Today buzztrix is based at 14 Widemarsh Court in Hereford and advises on studio equipment integration, camera operation, acoustics, lighting, live event broadcast, and workflow audits and training. Every project is still led by Rachel from first brief to final broadcast.

We stay small on purpose. The people who survey your studio are the people who plan the work and, where needed, run it on the day. That keeps decisions quick and means you always know who is responsible for what.

Fourteen years in, the approach has not changed much: ask what the programme needs, build only what supports it, test everything, and leave the client's team able to run it themselves.

What guides our decisions

  1. Reliability

    We test before we broadcast, document what we install and plan for faults. A live show only has one chance, so preparation comes before ambition.

  2. Clarity

    We explain technical choices in plain language and write down what is agreed. Clients should always know what they are paying for and what happens next.

  3. Craft

    Good framing, clean sound and careful lighting are built from small decisions. We take the time over them, because viewers notice when they are missing.

The experience behind our approach to live work

Our work draws on years of producing news, interviews and live shows, and on engineering, lighting and sound skills that sit within a single team. This is how that shows up in practice.

From the producer's chair

Rachel has produced live news and interview programmes for over fifteen years. That experience shapes how we think about running order, timing and what a presenter or guest needs to feel at ease. We plan technical work around the programme, not the other way round. It also means we recognise early when a plan will cause problems on air.

Engineering and craft

Daniel designs and commissions studio signal chains, from camera cabling to routing and monitoring. Priya plans lighting plots and shot lists, and supervises camera crews. Tom surveys rooms, specifies acoustic treatment and mixes live sound. Each of them works on live productions, so advice comes from people who have dealt with the problem.

Passing knowledge on

A good installation should not depend on us being in the room. We write run sheets, label equipment and train your team on the kit they use. The aim is a crew that can run its own broadcasts calmly, and that calls us for the hard parts, not the routine ones.
